Stairway Safety - Stair Construction Tips

If you've built as many stairways as I have, this is a very simple question to answer. Should I use 2 x 12 or 3 x 12 for my stair treads? Without a doubt I would use the 3 x 12 for a couple of reasons.

The thickness of the three by material gives it some additional strength and that strength could prevent someone from falling through the stairway and getting injured. Visually looking at the 3 x 12 it gives you the illusion that the stairway is safe. Once you start walking up the stairway and the stairs seem solid and well constructed, it takes the illusion and makes it a reality.

If you're walking up a poorly constructed stairway every day, not only is it a safety problem but it takes a little bit of effort as you walk up the stairway, holding on to the hand rail with a death grip, this can easily wear someone out physically and mentally, over time. Stairways should be constructed and maintained with safety as the main priority.

If you've ever walked up and older stairway that was built using 2 x 12 for the stair treads, you probably know what I'm talking about. Walking up and down the stairway, while the stair treads are moving, does not give you a strong sense that the stairway is safe. And of course sometimes the stairway isn't.

For example if you have a 3 inch knot in a 2 x 12 stair tread, over time as the wood expands and contracts, the knot can loosen up and fall out of the stair tread, often creating a weak spot in the step. With a thicker stair tread, it will take a little more expanding and contracting to create a weak spot in the stair step.

If you're building a stairway wider than 36 inches, with no center stair stringers to support the stairway, I would suggest using a 3 x 12 or 4 x 12 for your stair treads. 2 x 12 should not be used for stair treads on any staircase wider than 36 inches.

If you choose to use 2 x 12 for your stair treads, select premium grade lumber for safety. Try to avoid using center cut building materials and 2 x 12 with knots larger than an inch and a half. Large knots are one of the biggest problems in construction safety.

Lighting Solutions For Your Home With Flex Track Lighting

One of the commonly neglected areas of home decor tends to be lighting. For example, when we built our house, we failed to install lights in our living room, with the exception of a spotlight over the fireplace. When I remember this, I just cringe...why didn't we use flex track lighting? What were we thinking?!?

You may be asking, just as I did, what flex track lighting is all about. Good question! This is a system of lighting that is, well, flexible - meaning that you can shape it any way that you want, and the lights themselves are installed on tracks so that they can be moved or adjusted as the need arises. It's an ingenious lighting solution and one that works particularly well in homes or art galleries because of the versatility that it provides.

My father in law was a person who enjoyed building homes. He liked to create rounded corners and curved walls, and in many instances, conventional lighting solutions just weren't appropriate. With a curved wall, he could install flex track lighting to follow the curve and add a new dimension to his overall design.

This type of lighting is also known as monorail lighting, although the term is a little misleading, as there are actually two rails but they are quite close together and the electric current is run through them, with an insulating piece sandwiched between. I like the flex track lighting because there are no exposed cords to trip over. The only disadvantage that I could see is that this works best in new construction, rather than retrofitting existing lighting.

I would definitely consider building flex track lighting into any future house that we might build. It's a good way to illuminate and create design dimensions in your home or gallery space and it is a relatively inexpensive solution to lighting problems. Keep in mind, however, that this is not a reading light, nor is this system bright enough to replace lamps - but it certainly does create a beautiful dimension to a room! It is available in a variety of different finishes to complement your decor, so there should be a look to suit your home design.

Crystal Chandeliers and Art Glass Fixtures: Why we Love Them!

As a traveler from the West, it might seem strange to travel all the way to Japan and include a visit to a Glass Museum featuring Venetian and Murano glass and crystal from Italy. However, like so many other museum visitors, an appreciation and attraction to sparkling luminescence and colorful display warrants the price of admission.

For over 1000 years some of the worlds best glass makers have been making Murano glass. Passed down from master to apprentice Murano glass designed in chandeliers and light fixtures can include: clear and colored crystals, finely cut glass shaped into flowers, and marbleized, frosted, gold and silver glass shades. Some of the top lighting manufactures including: James Moder, ELK and Kalco incorporate Murano glass in a number of chandeliers and pendant fixtures. For contemporary lighting, ELK has a wonderful selection of colored glass pendants. Another manufacturer and line to check out is Shonbeks Geometrix. This lighting line by Schonbek marries the beauty of crystal with architectural detailing that is exquisite and delicate, like finding a treasure.

And while the inclusion of colored glass crystal in lighting is nothing new, it is certainly growing. Just like the fascination with stained glass lighting as witnessed for over a century with reproduction Tiffany lighting, people continue to enjoy the decorative effects of colorful glass patterned lamp shades. Collections like the above mentioned Shonbek Geometrix, include appeal for both modern lighting design and sparkling color intermixed in the fixture.

If you wonder where all this is going well, its not going away. If you love colorful illumination - Swarovski crystal, Murano glass, and colorful glass fixtures keep checking the collections of your favorite designers, or, new designers. Theyre sure to keep surprising you with some real lighting gems!

Bathtub DIY Repair

Repairs in your house are always likely going to cost quite a bit of money. There are many ways to cut down on these repair costs by doing some house repairs yourself. One repair which you should consider doing yourself is a bathtub repair. Fix it up a little and save yourself some money.

Bathtubs get a little discoloration here and there. There can be a few minor cracks. If the repair is minimal apply some of the DIY tips below. It is all about re-evaluating a little and choosing the cheaper option to save some money for a rainy day.

For the repair of impact damage and flaking on bathtubs with enamel, ceramic (porcelain) and acrylic surfaces. For this job you would need a repair paste suitable for porcelain, enamel and acrylic.a non yellowing repair spray(make sure about the non yellowing factor with the salesperson at your hardware store),some special sandpaper with minimal rub off on ceramic and enamelled surfaces and a wet/dry sandpaper for acrylic and fiberglass surfaces.

The area to be repaired must be clean, dry and free from oil or grease. Mix the filler and hardener well, then smooth the filler into the damaged area with a spatula. After 30 minutes, use the sandpaper to give an even smooth finish and wipe the area clean.

With minor defects use a touch up stick. Minor defects can be corrected quickly and economically. Make sure that the touch up stick is designed for ceramic, enamel, acrylic, powder coated and lacquered surfaces. A touch-up stick is a filling compound and final coat all in one. Therefore it is ideal for repairing impact damages, scratches and lacquer flaws on sanitary fixtures, tiles, fittings, heaters, kitchen sinks, ovens, washing machines, refrigerators and furniture.

Use a bath rubber to eliminate problems such as paint marks, adhesive residue, metal abrasions and tough stains on bathtub. This will enable you to thoroughly remove deposits without scratching enamel or ceramic surfaces.

Bear in mind that it is better to keep the repairs at a minimum so you can avoid paying for professional help and spending more money. This will buy you some time before you can make the final decision about whether you need to do a complete revamp of your bathroom by buying complete new hardware.

I am a proud homeowner who has done extensive remodelling on my home for the past 5 years.I initially bought a very small house and through the years have extended and remodelled. Speaking for all the DIY enthusiasts out there we all agree that remodelling your home is never a project that can ever be completed.By the time you have done your entire home, design trends have changed and it is time to start over again. For more tips and ideas on being proud of your home visit me at http://homeproud.blogspot.com

Why a Successful Bathroom Remodeling Plan is Necessary?

If anyone of you is interested in bathroom remodeling, he must also be interested in saving his money, which gets spent without letting you know if you are unaware of depths and heights of bathroom remodeling strategies. The most essential thing you would need for remodeling is a proper plan. If your plan has been perfectly made, taking in notice all the problems that might occur, there is rarely a chance that you would come across any kind of troubles. Besides, your project would be adored.

If you follow the step-to-step guide for bathroom remodeling, the very first thing to reckon is the purpose of doing such a project? The whole remodeling plan would be made upon your choice that whether the purpose of remodeling is to enhance the resale value of your property or your own convenience and taste. If you have a clear-cut idea about this, your bathroom remodeling plan is going to be very successful. This is what majority of people don't pay attention to. They just start planning a bathroom remodeling plan without going through several minor but important points.

However, just knowing and realizing the purpose of your bathroom remodeling plan is not going to help you in all the cases. Sometimes, your desired plan exceeds your budget; and making a budget is a whole different story. It includes costs of materials, contractors, plumbers, electricians and several other things that become the basic constituents of a bathroom remodel. You need to align your plan with your budget. Asking a local home improvement store's owner would be helpful for you if you are not market savvy. However, compromising on bad quality with a low cost is the most rejected idea. It will keep your pockets heavy for a while but later, you would always be in trouble until you plan a new remodel.

Besides, you need to keep extra money available for your budget. There are cases when something unexpected happens. Costs may increase and your project may get delayed. In such cases, you need money the most. You can also come up with new ideas in between the project. Making them possible won't just be a theory; it would only work with money.

You need to keep these basic things in your mind when making a bathroom remodeling plan. You can do some of the remodeling projects yourself but not all of them. In case you don't know anything about carrying out any such operation, don't make false assumptions that you would be able to do it because it won't be a time of experiments. Saving money and brilliantly completing a bathroom remodeling project must be your basic motto.

Hole In Roof And Roofing

Manufactured Roof Trusses or Conventional Roof Framing

Manufactured roof trusses are used in nearly 80 percent of all new homes constructed in America. The trusses are designed by structural engineers to ensure they meet roof load and building code requirements using a minimal amount of lumber, as opposed to conventional roof framing where choosing the size of rafters is often left to the builder. The result is often wasted lumber due to over building, if a 2 X 8 is good then a 2 X 10 would surely be better!

Ask anyone framing new homes today which is better and the answer will most certainly be trusses. Modern truss manufacturers can design and build trusses for the most complex roof and ceiling plans available in custom built homes.

Disadvantages of Conventional Roof Framing

  1. Conventional roof framing requires the use of larger framing members to form the roof plane as well as the ceiling resulting in higher labor costs.
  2. Each individual piece of the roof and ceiling must be figured out, marked, cut to length, then placed and nailed in the correct position.
  3. Requires the use of interior load bearing walls.
  4. May take several days to construct leaving the new home exposed to the elements for a longer period of time, increasing the chance for moisture damage.
  5. Highly experienced carpenters must be used further increasing labor costs.

Advantages of Stick Framing

  1. Building site space restrictions can be overcome with the use of stick framing roofs.
  2. Most truss builders can't build an interchange hip, rolling hip, or turret style roof.
  3. All framing lumber can be purchased locally and delivered the next day.

Disadvantages of Manufactured Roof Trusses

  1. Trusses must be ordered two to six weeks in advance.
  2. Uplift of improperly installed trusses results in drywall cracks and nail pops at the intersection of the ceiling and interior walls.

Advantages of Trusses

  1. Carpenters with less experience can set trusses, lowering labor costs.
  2. Fewer interior load bearing walls are needed due to the trusses longer free span.
  3. Shorter lengths of two by four stock are used to build trusses reducing material prices.
  4. Structural engineers design and certify roof trusses.
  5. Trusses can usually be set in one day, the interior of the home is exposed to the weather for a minimal amount of time.

Types of Roof Trusses

  1. Common
  2. Raised Heel
  3. Hip
  4. Gambrel
  5. Bowstring
  6. Scissor
  7. Room in Attic
  8. Girder
  9. Polynesian
  10. Multiple Piece

Ceiling Styles

  1. Flat
  2. Cathedral
  3. Vaulted
  4. Studio Vault
  5. Tray
  6. Coffer
  7. Barrel
  8. Inverted

These lists of roof truss type and ceiling styles is by no means exhaustive, consult with your builder and local truss manufacturer for more complete details.

The author of this article has 29 years experience building custom homes in the west and southwest suburbs of Chicago. He has been a Master Roof Cutter for the past eighteen, with even more experience setting roof trusses. More information on Conventional Roof Framing and Roof Trusses is available on his website.

Slow Market Home Pricing Advice

Homes are going to be sold in good markets and bad. When times are good, people often forget that bad times will be coming eventually. During good times, people often get caught up in the hype of the real estate boom. During tough times, houses will be sold eventually, or taken off the market and sold later. If you need to sell the home as soon as possible, for financial or other reasons, you will have to adjust your price with the current market and don't get greedy.

This is the hardest thing for most people to do, lower the price of their home in order to sell it in a slow real estate market. Don't get caught up in the value of your home, six months or even a year ago. Last year's prices are not going to be this year's prices and you need to get that through your thick skull. If the average homes in your neighborhood are selling for $250,000 and you have a swimming pool or done some upgrades, maybe a room addition. Your home is going to be worth more than the average selling price.

Most real estate professionals will price your home according to the length of time you have to sell it. If you're in a hurry to sell, they don't have time to test the market. The price of your home would need to be competitive or lower than homes selling in the area. Whether homes are selling fast in a good market for selling slow in a bad market, if you have time, you can ask a little bit more for your home. If the market hasn't reached the bottom, waiting could actually hurt you, because the prices of the homes in the area would still be dropping.

Listen to your real estate professionals advice when pricing your home. That's what you're hiring them for, they are in the real estate business. Your neighbors, relatives, friends and people you work with, will probably be guessing if you asked for their opinion on pricing your house.

Your house is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Finding that person is the key to selling your home, finding that person as soon as possible could give you the illusion that you sold your home to cheap. Don't worry about it, your final objective is to sell the house.

Painting the house without repairing these cracks and holes will affect the overall look and life of the paint. Working carefully on initial estimate will eliminate delays in the painting job. Make sure that the house was trimmed before the paint and all the dirty surfaces have been cleaned, it will help the paint to form a strong bond.

Once the work starts, monitor the crew staff closely because it would be difficult to fix the odd patches after the job. To get the job clean and exclusive, make sure that the crew staff is working with new equipment. Especially the rollers have to be in good working conditions. Paint the trim first, then ceiling and wall in the end. Starting with walls will waste the paints, and will also affect the looks of the paint negatively. Once the wall has been painted, the trim paint will appear on the wall paint, same is the case with ceiling.

Once the paint job is done; closely examine the edges of the walls and ceiling. As uneven and poorly painted edges affects the life of the paint badly. Since it is very difficult to deal with the plastic drop sheets, try to use cotton drop clothes.

When the job is finished, keep the contractor with you to examine the house. To ensure a safe and good looking paint job, several coasts are used to cover the surface. Any uneven coat or bleed through of the fresh paint should be fixed there and then. To inspect the paint properly have a look on the walls, ceilings and window frames from different angles and distance. This will give you the clear picture of the painting.

Painting contractors are professionals, they know the job better. All you have to do is to clearly communicate your requirements and limitations. Any miss-conception about the job will result into a conflict at the end. To make the paint job good experience, try to work closely to the contractors.

What Does a GFI Do? - Electrical Problems

In your bathroom you should have a GFI electrical outlet. Most new homes or newly remodeled homes require you to have GFI electrical outlets in the kitchen. Most older kitchens do not have GFI electrical outlets. GFI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter.

Why not call it a GFCI instead of a GFI electrical outlet? Well it is called a GFCI in some instances. GFI is short and is the most common name used by most electricians and builders for this type of outlet.

GFI 's come in 15 amp and 20 amperage outlets. GFI outlets must be wired properly. Make sure you're using the proper wire size when hooking up the GFI outlet.

How do I know which size wire to use? This all depends on how far away you are running it from the electrical panel. There are charts you can use to figure this out. If you are not running the electrical wire more than 80 feet from the electrical panel you can use 12 gauge electrical wires for a 20 amp GFI. This is a general rule of thumb for most electrical house wiring.

If you're going to be using a 15 amp GFI and you are going to be less than 80 feet away from the electrical panel you can use 14 gauge electrical wires. Again this is just a general rule of thumb for most electrical house wiring.

A GFI is a light duty electrical plug used in bathrooms, kitchens and the exterior of your house. The sole purpose of the GFI is to shut the breaker off faster if there is any moisture or light load problems.

Let's say for instance you have your hair dryer plugged into the GFI outlet. The hair dryer somehow falls into the sink while it is on or plugged in. The GFI outlet will instantly shut off because of the sensitivity of the breaker inside of the plug it self.

The GFI plug has a test button and a reset button on it. If you are continually resetting the GFI you will wear it out eventually. I have had GFI plugs after resetting the button about 10 times break and no longer able to use them.

The GFI electrical plug is a great idea and if you don't have them in your bathroom or outside of your home it would be a great idea to have an electrician install them for you.

When to Hire a Home Painting Contractor - San Deigo Home Tips

When dealing with home painting, it is often best to consider all options before choosing the best way to go about accomplishing the goals the homeowner has set for him or herself. The homeowner can either hire a professional to handle the work, hire some buddies to help out or can do the entire project alone, without any help from anybody. The last option is often where homeowners get into trouble, but realizing when to hire a contractor can save a good deal of time and money for the homeowner.

Being honest about how complicated a project may be and hiring a home painting contractor to help with the work is often the first step in ensuring a beautifully painted home. Unfortunately, not all homeowners are wise enough to make this decision and instead make poor decisions that end up hurting the quality of the project. Knowing when to hire a contractor and avoid any mishaps that may come about as the result of amateur work will not only save time and money, but can save the homeowners sanity as well.

With less mishaps or mistakes, homeowners will feel less stressed out by the entire project. A home painting contractor will be trained in how to deal with many of these mishaps and can act accordingly when they present themselves. Being able to effectively manage a project and deal with unforeseen problems that may arise may be the best thing for the project. Only a professional contractor has been properly trained in this manner and can offer this skill to his or her clients. A good home painting contractor will truly care about the project as well, putting in the extra effort to ensure that the client is satisfied with the work being done.

Hiring friends to help out with a project is an option that many homeowners choose when deciding to get work done on the house. While this may save money in labor fees, as many homeowners do not pay their buddies to help them out, they will often pay for it by sacrificing quality. Bonding with their friends should be done at a barbecue, and not on ladders when dealing with a complicated home improvement project. If nobody knows what they are doing, then the project will not get done in a way that is satisfying to the homeowner. This can cause even greater frustration and annoyances and can make the experience a negative one.

A home painting contractor will also be able to offer helpful advice when the homeowner is planning the project. Deciding what type of paint to use and what colors complement each other nicely can be a great help to homeowners that may not have had any experience in this aspect of home improvement. Their experience often comes in handy when dealing with the planning phase and can be a great help to the homeowner as he or she develops their ideas. Deciding where they want the project to go is important and involving the contractor will help the two parties get on the same page.

Moisture Against Gravity - Destroying Walls

Well I'm going to start this article with a little information on a job I did once.

I had been repairing a rental house for one particular homeowner for about three years when all of a sudden I got a phone call from him telling me the rental house was destroyed and he had never seen nothing like this. He sounded so upset over the phone I told him I would meet with him immediately.

On my way to the house I was trying to get an idea in my head what the house was going to actually look like. Since I have been repairing rental properties for over 20 years at this point of my career, nothing really shocked me. I had pretty much seen everything that could possibly be done to rental property by the tenants that lived there. There is a lot to be said about taking care of it as if it were your own.

He was waiting for me at the front door and he looked thoroughly disgusted. As I approached him he was shaking his head and yelling at the same time can you believe these people, can you believe what they did to my house. I was expecting to see the front door ripped off and all the windows broken out of the house but this wasn't the case.

As he led me through the home and I could see the usual clothing on the floor, broken cabinets, a few holes in the walls and of course that awful smell of mold and mildew. All of this stuff was nothing new to me because I'm the guy they call to fix it when a renter moves out of the property.

As I entered one of the bedrooms I got my first glimpse of something I had never seen before but heard stories about and could not believe my eyes. Looking at the walls in the bedroom about 3 feet from the floor all the way around the room, the plaster was soft. It actually looks like someone shoved popcorn into the wall somehow.

The homeowner wasn't even looking at this because of the rest of the damage in the home. I started to explain to him I'd never seen nothing like this but I could guess it was water damage somehow since the plaster was soft. I could actually stick my finger into the wall, that's how soft the plaster was.

My first thought was to examine the carpeting a little closer to see if it was wet. Well it was damp but it wasn't as wet as I would've expected it to be with the amount of water in the walls. With a little more home inspecting I had found the culprit, it was a broken water bed. The water bed was now in the backyard looking innocent.

I couldn't believe a broken water bed could do this much damage so I looked around for broken or leaking water pipes and could not find any. The other bad news I had to inform the homeowner was that the water had damage the bathroom and closet walls also. These walls of course were on the other side of the bathroom walls that were damaged.

Well the point of this story is that water will actually wick its way up or worked its way up into a wall. I had to remove 4 feet of drywall all the way around the room. The plaster or drywall actually acts like a sponge pulling the water into the walls. Hard to imagine that gravity in this case seems to reverse. I would've never thought that water would've traveled so far up the walls creating that much damage.

To repair the rental property I had to remove the damaged drywall, remove the carpeting, dry the wood framing out and put the whole thing back together.

I'm still amazed and will remember that project for as long as I live.

Electricity And Water Do Not Mix On Los Angeles Job Sites

There are many different types of construction jobs and there are many of them that have power tools using electricity and there are jobs where the employer expects their crews to work during rain and wet conditions. Electricity and water do not mix on the job, contrary to what the construction company thinks to bring in the job on time this is placing each and every employee on this job site in danger. Any Los Angeles Construction accident attorney will tell you that electricity and water do not mix on Los Angeles job sites.

Power tools that use electricity have plug connections that are drug along the ground this can easily let water travel this connection leading right to the employee using the tool or any employee that walks across this connection. Electrocution often ends in death, and when it does not it has severe injuries the person will suffer from burns to coma and when this happens their loved ones suffer loss, loss from death or the injuries that are so damaging to the human body that the person may never be the same for the rest of their lives.

It is common sense that electricity and water do not mix on the job, but the construction companies concern is the bottom line, get the contract completed on time and often make it impossible for employees to take rain days off for fear of losing their job.

When an employee is injured or killed on the job site because of unsafe conditions in Newport Beach, Burbank, Playa del Rey or any other job site in Orange County there are attorneys who will fight for this person, who killed or injured, whose family is suffering and will feel the pain of this needless accident for a long time to come.

These skilled attorneys will fight to build a case with the use of their experts and skilled staff that will take each step with the utmost care to ensure the outcome will benefit their client. Orange County attorneys who are experienced in electrocution cases and construction cases have knowledge and experts that other attorneys would not have access to and could not represent a client this well in an electrocution case.

This is a devastating time and the construction company and their construction accident defense attorneys are not going to sit still, they are going to protect themselves and this can even include offers to the family to settle instead of going to court. This of course is never a fair settlement, they present this knowing that without the protection of experienced Los Angeles injury lawyers, they do not have to be fair because there is no one to hold them accountable. Not just any generic car accident attorneys in LA handle these types of injuries, so it is important to learn from someone with experience and skill in dealing with contractors and engineers.

Hiring a Contractor For Bathroom Remodeling - Remodeling Contractors

Well here's the age old question, how do we go about finding a decent bathroom remodeling contractor.

Here's some things you will be looking for in a contractor.

1. Is Your Contractor Fair and Honest?

2. Does Your Contractor Have Experience Remodeling and Designing Bathrooms?

3. Can You Actually Find a Contractor Who Will Complete the Job in a Timely Manner?

4. Do You Think the Workers Will Be Able to Clean the Job up Daily?

5. Will the Contractor Show up on Time?

6. Is the Contractor Going to Work At Least Eight Hours a Day?

7. Does the Contractor's Crew Have Experience?

8. Is Your Contractor and His Crew Courteous?

If you find a contractor for your bathroom remodeling project that has answered yes to all questions above, hire that person immediately. Most contractors can sincerely answer yes to half of the questions above. If you're looking for the ultimate bathroom remodeling contractor, you could be searching for quite a while, you're looking for some one that is competent and you feel comfortable with.

When hiring a contractor, look for someone who has your interest in mind first and not theirs. Find someone who is willing to help with the designed process of your bathroom and the remodeling. If you find a contractor to be arrogant or controlling, there is a good chance, your bathroom might not turn out the way you envision it.

When hiring a contractor for your bathroom remodeling project or any home improvement project, the most important thing to keep in mind is, whether or not you feel comfortable with this person or not. Never hire a contractor you're not comfortable with.

If a contractor is referred to you by someone you trust, this does not guarantee you will be happy with the bathroom remodel. Most referrals that I have gotten over the years are like rolling the dice, I believe I would have done just as good picking a name out of a hat.

Checking the Building For Square

The most important thing when building a home is the ability to keep everything as square, plumb and level as possible. Starting with the foundation, if the foundation is not square or level, the rest of the house is going to be out of alignment.

You've probably heard the saying, start with a good foundation. This applies to the building industry as well. There are quite a few ways to build a square foundation, it all depends on what kind of tools you have, to build it with.

Some of these tools can be quite expensive but it used every day can save you a lot of time and of course time is money.

You don't need expensive tools to build a square foundation. You could actually build a square foundation with less than $100 worth of tools. It might take you a little longer but could be done.

Let's start with the 3 - 4 - 5 rule.

Okay lets see if I can explain this in layman's terms. If no West side of the foundation is 3 foot and the north side of the foundation is for foot, then the diagonal measurement from the southwest corner to the northeast corner would be 5 foot. Out of square building can create foundation problems

This can also be done using 30' x 40' should equal 50 foot. You can use this if the building is large and you need to check it for square.

By measuring the foundation diagonally from each corner, the measurement should be exactly the same. If it isn't, the building is out of square and should be adjusted before the concrete is poured. This measurement should always be checked before you get too far along in the form building process.

Styling Up Your Outdoor Patio is Tiring Yet EXCITING!

Outdoor events are taking over as the in thing everyone will be up for. You can have twice the fun outside than you do indoors. The cool ambiance will turn everybody's mood into a good one and the fact that it is closer to nature makes it a blast. You need not worry about food, as they are of course within your reach. Just lie back, enjoy the sceneries with friends and family while lying down on patio furniture and the warmth of patio heaters that will surely be relaxing.

Contrary to popular opinions, setting a patio is not that difficult at all. You can have a patio makeover with half the price. All you need is to put in essential pieces of furniture in the patio. You should also remove anything that is distracting to the eye. Setting up a focal point should be for the purpose that it can grab the attention of those who are in the patio. An outdoor market umbrella is essential as it will protect you and the guests from climate changes. As for the temperature at night that can be a bit chilly, an outdoor patio will solve your problem.

Nature's theme is a popular choice because everyone loves being in nature where there is lush greeneries, clean and unpolluted environment. Nature inspired theme will be more comfortable which is one of the reasons why people build patios in the first place. Outdoor market umbrella will provide shades from the piercing rays of the sun at the middle of the day. It can be decorated to appear like giant palm trees that offer shades for lost travelers.

Plants and flowers is an added advantage to creating an ambiance of nature. Flowers can match your preference. There are certain flowers that makes people amazed and interested, on the other hand there are also flowers that can annoy people and make them feel edgy. The plants and flowers would naturally need watering and sunlight. Place them in areas where they can be exposed to sunlight and a bit further from outdoor market umbrella. However, during rainy seasons, they can be placed under the umbrella to avoid them from drowning.

A focal point can be placed in the middle of the patio where everyone could see it when they enter the patio, or at an interesting spot that makes it shine most among the other elements in the patio. The focal point is like a main attraction that catchers everyone's attention and will be well remembered by everyone who came by as the item or structure they'll look forward to the next time they come and visit. A focal point can be a fountain, a painting, a large stone with symbolic meanings, a lush flower garden, or even a stone statue with your own portrait.

The patio covers are important. They are there to help protect your furniture from the damages caused by the weather. Outdoor market umbrella can guard your outdoor furniture from the unexpected weather change and with a portable and easy to install and uninstall, consider your problems solved. The patio heaters also serves you well when you need to lay down or sleep outside even if the air is cool.

Outdoor parties need not be extravagant and filled with too much food that's impossible to totally consume. What's important is your camaraderie with your friends and family, and the bonding moments that will be created and treasured in your outdoor patio event. It's not bad to impress your friends with your patio furniture and decorations, but it's better to amaze them by your willingness to accept them into your home, sharing all you resources just to make them feel at home and at ease.

Home Selling Tips - Best Real Estate Advice Ever

One of the most important things to remember when selling your home is to keep it as clean as possible. If you need help or don't have the time to organize your stuff, you can hire a home staging professional in your area. Ask your real estate professional for more information.

1. Remove any clutter from the home and place it in storage. Do not store this stuff on the property if you don't have enough room. Storing clutter in closets or in your garage, will often make these areas look smaller. By removing clutter or even large pieces of furniture, the rooms will look larger.

2. Disconnect yourself emotionally from your home. This is a big problem for people who have lived in their house for long periods of time. If you've raised a family here, the children could have emotional ties also to the home. Some home sellers are looking for someone special to buy their home, if you've got the time and money to wait, you can be selective but be careful, because the longer you wait, the market could go up or down.

3. When your real estate professional is showing the house, it's always a good idea to leave the home until the potential homebuyers are gone. One example of this would be if you were in a bad mood or didn't have a good day and were a little upset at the world. Your mood could cause potential homebuyers to lose interest in the property. I've seen this more than once.

4. Make sure everything is operating properly. This would include doors, door knobs, windows, kitchen appliances, garage door openers, cabinet drawers, bathroom fixtures, toilets, faucets, lights, switches, electrical outlets and anything else that moves, slides, turns or rotates that is part of the home.

5. The Interior and exterior walls of the home should be in good shape. Make sure there's no termite damage, wood rot, peeling paint, broken windows or holes in the walls.

6. Make sure the flooring is in good shape. Some real estate professionals will suggest, replacing the carpeting with a neutral color. This method often works pretty good but I have seen plenty of homes that were re-carpeted and after the home was purchased the carpeting was replaced again, by the new owners. Just make sure the flooring is in good shape.

7. Here's a trick that definitely works a little magic when selling a home. Leave some cookies or a nice fruit bowl on the dining room table. There is no need to leave a sign that says "Eat Me". It gives the home a warm feeling, almost like a country atmosphere.

8. Even better than home selling tip number seven would be baking some cookies just before the perspective buyers arrive, it's not the cookies, it's the smell from the cookies that most people cannot resist.

These are just a few home selling tips but the most important is to keep the inside and outside of the home clean.

Luck is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity

You must be ready when an opportunity comes before you, opportunity often comes in the form of work and that's why most people seem to miss it. Most people are too busy looking for the easy path through life. They seem to lay around waiting for the opportunity of a lifetime,... to simply fall at your feet.

Why would you want to spend so much time complaining about something, or someone? Other people can help you along the way, if you let them, but it's up to you, ultimately, to become the most you can possibly be. I have had plenty of opportunities in my life and have took advantage of some, while letting most of them pass by.

I'm no different than most people but now seem to be aware of my surrounding opportunities, all the time.

How many times do you wish for an opportunity to come along? It's probably one that you missed already, at some point during your life. Are you going to be prepared for the next opportunity when it comes along? These opportunities seem to repeat themselves throughout our lives and if we're not in the right state of mind, we often overlook them and let them pass by, time and time again.

You need to prepare yourself in advance for the next opportunity. If you are prepared and have your eyes open, you will be able to see the next opportunity that comes your way. Preparation will increase your chances for success and good fortune always.

Opportunities come in all shapes and sizes. Be on the lookout, when you're walking to the grocery store, taking a break at work, reading the newspaper, talking to your neighbor, walking down the street or even while you are sitting alone, letting your mind wander away. Your chances for success could come while your in your quiet places, or relaxing. Be prepared.

Five Tips For Remodeling Your Bathroom on a Budget

You should not have to spend a lot of money on remodeling your home, especially your bathroom. But when you are already spending money on the mortgage each month, as well as the rest of your life, it can seem like remodeling the bathroom is a far fetched dream. However, with a little planning and prioritizing, you can bring contemporary bathroom designs into your life and into your home. Here are five tips for contemporary bathroom remodeling on a budget.

Tip #1 What do you want?

A lot of homeowners start by determining their budgets before remodeling their bathroom, but this is not necessarily the best course of action. When you are taking the time to consider remodeling, you should be thinking of the goals for the end result. In short, you need to figure out what you really want to take from contemporary bathroom designs and place into your current bathroom. Make a list of the various things that you envision for your bathroom (as though you had an unlimited budget) in order to get this brainstorming session started. This will help you figure out what you really want now instead of going back to remodel again when you find that you are not happy, a much more expensive process.

Tip #2 Figure out what is important to you

With your dream list in hand, it is time to consider what contemporary bathroom remodeling features are absolute musts in your design plans.Perhaps you want a new bathroom vanity, or countertop, vessel bathroom sinks or new bathroom mirrors, whatever the case, think about what isreally at the top of your list in terms of what you do not want to live without. By prioritizing your design ideas, you will find that you may be able to save money by focusing your budget on one or two expensive pieces, but trimming down other costs.

Tip #3 Shop around

Though you probably already knew this, trimming your budget can be as simple as looking at a number of stores and retailers before you make your final purchase. Since you have a list in hand, this part is much easier. Go to contemporary bathroom remodeling websites as well asstores in your area to see what prices they have to offer. With the smart purchases you make, contemporary bathroom designs can be yours, even if you are not the one installing them.

Tip #4 Do it yourself

The trick with do it yourself projects is that you really need to be able to handle the remodeling tasks. If you are unsure that you will be able to complete the installation of various contemporary bathroom designs, you will want to call in a professional (and save yourself both stress and money fixing what you have installed incorrectly). But if you are fairly handy and willing to take your time, the best laborer to NOT pay is yourself or a family member.

Tip #5 Find easier ways

A lot of homeowners do not realize that there are contemporary bathroom designs that do not take a lot of money or effort to install, for example, laid in bathtubs and some vanity cabinets. By taking the time to look at the installation process, you may find that you are able to handle the work yourself and that it will come at a much lower price. Along the same vein, you might also be able to do smaller projects over time to enhance the look of your bathroom without needing to spend a lot of money all at once.

When it comes to handling your contemporary bathroom remodeling budget, the best times you will spend is not in a store, but before you get to that store.Prioritize what you want, take the time to find it, finish the project yourself or call in a professional, and try to think of ways to make the financial contribution a little easier. With these tips, you will get the bathroom of your dreams without spending more than you can imagine.

Greg Vanden Berge is working on the internet to promote the education for creating simple to follow guides and home building books to help professional building contractors as well as the weekend warriors. He has just finished a Home Buyers Guide to take some of the frustration out of home shopping.

Got Your Tankless Water Heater Yet?

Haven't Gotten Your Tankless Water Heater Yet?

Well, I'm not sure what's stopping you. My tankless water heater is one of the best appliances I've ever purchased and installed. It's one of those types of things you end up asking yourself "Why didn't I do this before?" Every day I look at my new water heater I'm amazed by it. Let me enumerate the reasons:

I'm amazed by its size. I have an electric Titan tankless water heater and so help me it's only slightly larger than a yellow pages phone book and it's no more than about two and a half inches thick. There are no moving parts except for a control knob on the front of the unit. Remarkable.

I'm amazed by its power. How something so small can produce an ENDLESS amount of hot water without the fear of running out, regardless of how many back to back showers we take, is way, way beyond me. I'm sure the propane and gas tankless units do the same. And I live in New Hampshire and have well water that's COLD! Maybe it's because I'm so accustomed to seeing five foot high monoliths that were required to do the same task. It's a 60 amp, 240v system. Piece o' cake.

I'm amazed by its cost savings. I immediately noticed a 30% reduction in my electric bill after replacing the TWO pieces of junk that were there cycling on and off 24 hours a day. With this water heater it only calls for electricity when the unit calls for hot water. Not a second sooner. And there's no need for wrapping it in an insulation blanket either because there's no standing water that can cool down only to need to be reheated. Imagine what savings you'd find with your gas or propane water heater.

I'm amazed by the ease of installation. I used PEX for the plumbing, wired it myself to its own 60 amp breaker using six gauge wire and the whole process took less than 2 hours. It would have taken less time, but, I'm not a plumber or electrician by trade. Since there's no joints to sweat using PEX, everything was just snap and go. The Titan tankless water heater is just mounted on the wall. Almost like a painting. No bulky tanks to move around and no need for reserving a large space for it.

I've got my tankless water heater installed. And though mine is made by Titan you can also get great units from Bosch, Rinnai and Takagi just to name a few. So, when are going to install yours?

There's whole lot more of information about tankless water heaters out there besides what I've written here. Check it out at: http://gotankless.info.

When We Choose Misery Over Happiness

I am not one to feel sorry for most people. They seem to have a unique ability to cause themselves the most damage during certain parts of their lives. I have met some pretty self destructive people in my life. Being raised by a mother that lived in misery and love.

My mother had a difficult childhood. It seemed as if every corner she turned there was a obstacle either right in front of here or waiting just around the corner. Her father died when she was 12 year old. He was a farm laborer and didn't make much money. In other words they were poor...... She got sent to live with a few foster families and according to her she was molested by one of the fathers she lived with.

Soon her older sister invited her to live with her. My aunt was married to the owner of a pottery business and had 2 children about 10 years younger than my mother. My aunt soon realized she had a live in baby sitter that allowed her to stay out drinking most of the day.

My Uncle was what you would call a drunk back then, now we call these people alcoholics. Well any way I think you are starting to get a picture of my mothers life up to this point. It is probably safe to assume that this isn't the ideal life for a young woman.

The next event to happen in my moms life was for my uncle to fall in the shower one night after tying one on that night. He died soon after but my aunt seemed to make a another good choice and ended up marring the owner of the bar that they spent most of their time in.
The Grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for. Allan K. Chalmers

By this time my mom was in High School and met my future father. It wasn't exactly a marriage made in heaven. My dad was always an easy going man. He seemed to let most stuff go in one ear and out the other.

As you guessed it they had a few children. Nice one Dad and Mom. According to the books I have read on Angelic beings. People that believe in the after life and angels. They tell me I had a choice and was able to choose my parents....... What was I thinking...... I should have choose someone with some money and a couple of parents that were deeply in love .

How did I end up here in this situation.

I ended up loving my parents like most of us. They seemed to be doing the best that they could possibly do raising me, my bother and my sister. My mom and dad ended up getting a divorce and I went to live with my father.

My Father is remarried to a wonderful woman that seems to bring him a lot of happiness.
I haven't seen my mother for a while now. She lives with a life of excuses and misery. Her childhood was not the greatest but that doesn't give her the right to bring misery into other peoples lives. She has made a conscious choice to live what seems to be a painful life. Maybe her choices in life have made me choose happiness over misery.

I have always wondered what it is that motivates someone to live a life of true unhappiness when it takes the same amount of energy to live a life of joy. Life is meant to be full of joy and happiness so start today by making the right choices to live a fulfilling life of happiness.

Sink Water Filter - Discover the Dangers You Face Without One

Have you ever sat down to consider the many health benefits that you and your family could enjoy through the purchase and installation of a sink water filter? Many people still don't realize the dangers that they face every time that they pour themselves a glass of unfiltered tap water.

Do you realize that here we use around 80,000 industrial chemicals? Most, if not all of these harmful chemicals, have found their way by some method or another into our ground water supply. This means that traces of any or all of these chemicals may be present in your drinking water at home.

A high quality sink water filter is a necessity for your family due to the fact that there is no protection from these chemical contaminants that your local water treatment center can offer you. Their equipment is simply not designed to allow the blocking of these chemicals to be possible.

Of course they are also not able to stop the flow of certain parasites and cysts that are in our water supply either. You see, not every microbe is killed by the chlorine disinfection process that our drinking water receives. These parasites can cause serious harm to you if they are ingested.

A good sink water filter can protect your family from the harmful effects of all of these parasitic and chemical threats through the use of a four pronged system of filters. They are each designed to take care of a different problem area.

Let me explain to you exactly what is necessary in order for you to be fully protected.

What you need in order to rid yourself of all of the hazardous chemicals that are part of your drinking water supply are a multi block filter, and an activated granular carbon filter. These two are both necessary because of the vast array of the chemicals that are in our water.

Your sink water filter also needs to be armed with a sub micron filter in order to be able to rid you of the threat that is posed to you and your family by microscopic parasites and cysts. Your family can rest easy knowing that the threat that these microbes cause has been effectively abated.

Your system is not complete without the inclusion of a filter that will remove toxic heavy metals such as lead and copper from your drinking. An ion exchange filter is necessary in order to achieve this goal by trapping the traces of metal and replacing them with healthy electrolytes.

If you have a reasonably priced filter that employs all of the elements that I have mentioned in this article, then you and your family will be fully taken care of. But don't settle for anything less or there will still be contaminants present. You want your family to be as protected as possible.
Hopefully you now see what an integral role a sink water filter can play in your lives. There is no time like the present for starting your search for just the right model for you.

What Ever Happened to My Favorite Little Boutique Resort?

We have all taken vacations and stayed at marvelous independently owned boutique resorts and bed and breakfasts. We marvel at their attention to detail, their value, their friendliness, and the hard work and long hours the owners put in to make us happy. Many of us have probably said because of a good experience, "I would love to open a bed and breakfast or small resort someday."

This year more than ever, small independent resorts and B & B's need your vacation dollars. Not only have they always had to compete against the large impersonal chain hotels and motels while having a fraction of their advertising and marketing budgets, but they have always had much higher operating expenses because of the great amenities they have for their guests compared to chains.

This is not the year to decide to cut back on vacationing at your favorite boutique resort or B & B as they may not be around next year.

We have all called to make reservations at a favorite place, only to sadly find out it went out of business and thought, "that was such a nice little resort, we have such wonderful memories there, I wonder why it went out of business." They went out of business because people stayed at chain hotels on their vacations.

Many people don't appreciate small businesses in America. It is like what happened with the "Wal-Marting" of America. Wal-Mart moved into small towns, people start shopping at them. All of a sudden their neighbors who owned small businesses went out of business. Downtowns declined, property values went down, Wal-Mart got rich and people said, "what happened to our town?" Every time they shopped at Wal-Mart, they were responsible for the decline in their own towns.

The same is true with small resorts. Everyone loves staying at them. But, this year, the year of the staycation may drive your favorite small resort out of business and you will have no one to blame but yourself. Small resorts need your help more than ever. They need for you to get relaxed and pampered at them. They need for you to forgo vacations overseas. Stay in the US and support fellow Americans with your vacation dollars.

And don't just go on weekends. Everyone wants to go to a boutique resort on a weekend. For instance nice small resorts turn away hundreds of guests wanting to stay with them on Valentine's Day because they are full. Go before Valentine's Day. Go midweek. Go off season on vacation. That is how you will help small resorts and B & B's.

This is the year to vacation at your favorite independent hotel. Vacation in the good old USA!

Bathroom Moisture Problems - Home Repair

Right above my bathtub in my master bathroom the paint is peeling off the wall. The area is peeling above the tile in my bathtub and shower combination. I tried to glue the peeling paint back and only made the situation worst.

First things first. The paint is peeling because there is to much moisture in the bathroom while you are using it. Do you have any windows you can open or a ventilating bathroom fan. If you have a window crack it open part way while you are showering.

The water droplets will accumulate on the walls and drip into any cracks. Right above the tile grout is a great place for moisture to accumulate. Oh yeah moisture loves grout and drywall. If you have any unpainted areas or an area that has cracked. Guess what you have now.

Your paint is peeling because the bathroom gets hot and cold. Moist and dry. If you have the door and windows shut. You just created a moisture trap. Most people prefer their privacy and will closes the door when using the shower. Well then open the window and let some cold air in while you are taking a nice warn shower. I don't think so. Most showering fools don't like that idea either.

Ok one more idea keep the windows shut so you don't let the cold air in. Then lock the door so no on barges in on you. If you have a ventilation fan turn it on. This will at least pull fresh air in from under the door and send the moist air out of the house.

But the fan is so noisy and I can't enjoy my nice warm vapor producing shower that will eventually cause me to get sick from mold particles floating around in the air while I am using my bathroom.
Does this about sum it up for you and don't we all do this from time to time. We want to enjoy our shower time, so we close up everything and when we are in our bath sauna environment relaxing our house is getting some damaging moisture that could cause mold and mildew.

Open a window or door a little when you shower. Get some air circulating through the bathroom and prevent damage to your nice house.

Put up with a little inconvenience for you homes sake and your pocket book.

The Parable Of Faith

A man owned a farm with his wife and teenage son.

Shortly before picking season, his son hurt his back playing sports, thus not being able to pick the crops.

A friend said to the man, Isnt it terrible that your son hurt his back and cannot pick the crops?

Perhaps replied the farmer.

During picking season, the farmer had to hire someone to replace his son working the fields.

The friend said Isnt it terrible that you have to spend all this money to get the crops picked?

Perhaps

Shortly after crop season, the farmer lost his farm and had to move into a rented house.

Isnt it terrible that you lost your farm and had to move?

Perhaps

Then, the farmers wife left him for another man.

Isnt it terrible that your wife left you?

Perhaps

Next, his son lost his hand when it got caught in the machinery at the mill where he worked.

Isnt it terrible that your son lost his hand?

Perhaps

Lastly the man was diagnosed with a terminal illness which would certainly kill him.

Isnt it terrible that you have this illness and are going to die?

Perhaps

Finally, the friend asked the farmer, How come each time there is bad news, you simply respond by saying perhaps?

The farmer got quiet for a second and replied:

When my son hurt his back, I went and hired someone to work the fields. One day, there was a terrible accident in which the man was killed. Because of the bad news of my sons hurt back, he is alive today.

After his family sued me, the courts took my farm since I had no insurance. We moved into town and the following spring a tornado hit the old farmhouse, killing everyone inside. Because of the bad news of losing my farm, my family is alive today.

Then, my wife left me for another man. After I got over the grieving, I met and fell in love with a younger woman. After we were married, she blessed me with a daughter. Because of the bad news of my wife leaving, I have a child I otherwise would not have had.

Then my son lost his hand at the mill. At that time, all his friends were called up to the war. Of course, my son could not serve his country, much to his disappointment. However, the bus that was carrying his friends was involved in a horrible crash, killing all on board. Because of the bad news of him losing his hand, my son is still alive today.

And now, I am faced with the bad news of having an illness that will kill me. However, all through my life, what appeared to be bad news was actually a fantastic blessing. After time, I realized that each event was actually God helping me. Because of that, I have no reason to believe that this is any different. Is the fact that I have a disease that will kill me bad news?

Perhaps

Shower Head Sale Tips and Advice

Taking a shower is one of the most invigorating exercises one can engage in. We wake up in the morning and almost instinctively make a dash for the shower. For some, a cold or hot shower actually helps them wake up. A cold or hot shower in the evening after a long day at work is also extremely reviving and much report being engulfed with a sense of freshness and new vitality.

Man has come a long way to arrive where we are with showers. Rivers, lakes, waterfalls and also primitive wells used to be the showers back in the 1st century. Today we have high pressure showers and someone can get cleaner and feel fresher than when not using a shower.

A major component of showers is the shower head. While many people don't know this, there are many types shower heads. We are all accustomed to just getting into a shower and turning the faucet on and out comes the water jet. But different shower heads mean different things. A right shower head can save you money in form of water and can even boost your health. The wrong shower head is a drain to energy and can also be expensive as far as your water bill is concerned.

There are literally hundreds of different shower heads in the market costing anywhere from $100 to close to a few thousands (there are those which cost more depending on the material used to make them). The best shower heads are those have in-built energy-saving components. In the market today, you will find two predominant shower heads, the manual mixer and the thermo mixer. The manual mixer is the most common but unknown to most people, this shower head is a huge energy and water waster. A good shower head should be able to restrict the flow of water to 2.5 gallons per minute. This is good for water conservation and comes easy on your water bill. The thermo mixer mixes water and oxygen and then warms the water before it allows it out.

Mixing water with oxygen bubbles means that the water will be highly oxygen-saturated which is good for your skin. It also means that you can have a very invigorating shower without using a lot of water yet get the needed cleanliness just as it would have been with twice the amount of water. Thermo-mixer shower heads are also time savers. Instead of standing in the shower waiting for the water to warm up, you can do something else like warm coffee, brush your teeth, shave or check your email quickly. Then in a few minutes you can get into the shower and the water will be exactly the right temperature.

It is therefore essential to get the right shower head. If you want to switch from the regular manual mixer to the energy-saving shower heads, the best place to start is your local home improvement store such as Home Depot.

Theodore provides information about the best shower heads and recommends the best shower heads that save energy.

DIY Bathroom Remodeling Or Hiring a Contractor

The first question you need to ask yourself when remodeling a bathroom is can you actually do the work yourself or do you have someone that can help you with the remodeling. If you don't know anyone and can't do the work yourself, I would suggest hiring a contractor with experience remodeling bathrooms.

If you can do the work yourself or think you could do the work yourself, why not give it a shot. Any experience you have in construction or home remodeling, is going to be beneficial to your bathroom remodeling project. There is plenty of information on the internet or in your local libraries on bathroom remodeling and these often prove to be great resources for do it yourselfers.

As an experienced contractor I have gathered a great deal of information through books, at work and watching local home improvement shows. The biggest problem with the show's and quite a few of these books, is they don't provide enough information. Most of the time they provide you with the basics of bathroom remodeling and you could soon find yourself in trouble or seeking the advice from a home improvement professional.

The largest benefit for doing the bathroom remodeling project yourself, could be the money you save, along with the satisfaction of completing the project. It makes homeowners feel good when they've completed a large home remodeling project, like a bathroom remodel.

If you don't have the time, lack the experience or a combination of both, I would suggest hiring a contractor to relieve you from the stress and frustration of your bath remodeling project. The more complex your bathroom remodeling project is, the greater the degree of difficulty, the longer it will take to complete the project. Some of these projects can take up a lot of your time.

If you're working on galvanized water supply pipes or old cast iron waste pipes, you could find yourself hiring a plumber to install your bathtub and fixtures. These old pipes create problems for most do it yourselfers and I would suggest hiring a professional, whenever you run into a problem you don't feel comfortable with.

Choosing to tackle some of these difficult problems yourself, could lead to water leaks and more damage to the home eventually costing you even more money than the original cost of hiring an experienced plumber in the first place. When it comes to water, structural framing and electricity, think twice, especially if you're not experienced in these areas.

My advice to do it yourselfers is to hire a professional if you're not comfortable or seek the advice from a contractor or someone with considerable experience bathroom remodeling.

Finding Grants for Green Construction

When it comes to new construction techniques, grants are often a way to cut costs. Federal grants for green construction are plentiful with billions literally available.

A federal grant is an award of financial assistance from a Federal agency. It is intended to carry out a public purpose or support or stimulate a purpose that is authorized by a law of the United States. Federal grants can be found and applied for electronically. The site Grants.gov is the central clearing house for Federal Grants.

There are twenty six different agencies that offer over 1,000 grant programs. The grants that apply to green construction are mostly offered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The total amount of grants available exceeds $400 billion dollars. The grants offered by the feds fall into twenty one categories. The categories that have the most impact on green construction are Energy, Environmental Quality, and Health.

Most of the grants are directed toward specific geographical areas. Some of the major concerns of the grants include water quality improvement and the prevention of urban storm water runoff. Many of the grants are connected with the Leeds certification program. Leeds stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a program that is run by the United States Green Building Council and it establishes green construction standards and awards certificates to those that maintain these standards.

Although there are federal grants available, it is on the state and local level that the large majority of grants can be found. The green movement is a grassroots type of thing that appears to be strongest at the local level. Environmental concerns are often very local, and the problems that have been caused by the neglect of the environment are local as well. The pollution of waterways is a good example of this. grant programs exist that are directed at the Great Lakes or at Puget Sound, for example. States that are bordering these waterways usually offers these grants. The idea of environmental impact areas has led to the localities that border or are inside the impact area being the best source of funds for projects that will address the problems.

Private foundations like the Kresage Foundation are among the best sources of green construction grants. The Kresage Foundation has been offering grants under their Green Building Initiative Program. It is specifically geared toward the area of planning and design. While it is true that State, local, and private foundations are the major sources of grants that can be considered pure green building, the federal government is also a source. Research is the key to finding a grant for your project, so take the time to explore the various options mentioned above.

Stay in Holiday Accommodation in Derbyshire When You Come to Britain

Derbyshire is a county that lies in the East Midlands of England, just below Yorkshire. It is one the loveliest of the eastern counties of England. A bed and breakfast or self catering stay is one of the best ways to see the attractions and sights of this lovely area. Many bed and breakfast and self catering properties are available in all regions of the county which also contains most of Peak District National Park. The County town is the city of Derby which is now a unitary authority area, so technically separate from the county but it remains part of the ceremonial county of Derbyshire. The County has a population of just over 996,000 and covers 2,625 square kilometres.

Geography: Most of the Peak District National Park is in Derbyshire and the northern part also overlaps with the Pennines. It shares borders with Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.

History: Derbyshire has been settled by people for a very long time and there are neolithic burial mounds all over the area. The romans were attracted to the area because of the mineral lead that they found in abundance. They settled throughout the county with forts built near Brough in the Hope Valley and near Glossop. Later they settled around Buxton, famed for its warm springs, and set up a fort near. During Saxn times the county formed part of the Kingdom of Mercian and several kings of Mercia are buried in the Repton area. The Danes conquered the region and formed an independent earldom centred on Derby which gave the earldon its name. The West Saxon King Edward, son of Alfred the Great, retook the area from the Danes. Under the Normans much of the county was subject to the forest laws. The fast flowing streams created water power in the seventeenth century and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

Industry: Coal mining was a very important part of the Derbyshire economy until the 1990s but mining has now mostly ceased and much of the industrial pollution and scarring has been eradicated although limestone quarrying still scars some areas. The region is now largely based on mixed agriculture, some heavy industrial engineering and tourism. The landscape varies from arable farming in the flat lands to the south of Derby, to the hill farming of the high moorlands of the southern Pennines, north of Derby city. Derbyshire is rich in natural resources like lead, iron, coal, and Limestone which is quarried to provide the industries of the surrounding towns with lime for building and steel making and cement manufacture.

Tourism: Derbyshire offers many attractions including the spectacular Peak District and many interesting towns and villages such as Bakewell, Buxton, and Derby. There are many castle and fine buildings such as Chatsworth House, the beautiful Dove Dale, and Matlock Bath. In the north of the county, Howden, Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs now provide an area used for leisure pursuits like walking and cycling as part of the Peak District National Park. The National Trust has many properties and a lot of land.

Accommodation is not a problem and there are a large number of Bed and Breakfast and self catering properties right across the county, although you should book well in advance if you intend to arrive in one of the more popular destinations such as Derby, in the busy season. These properties range in size from a single room in a house to a 10 to 12 bed establishment in a town centre. Prices also reflect the popularity of the location and can be quite high. In Britain, bed and breakfast and self catering places can be found in every location and they are a lot more personal and friendly than other forms of accommodation.

Why Basement Remodeling?

With the long-running housing crunch in New York caused by the influx of people wanting to be a part of it; smaller living units have become the more popular choice posing as the more affordable option. Naturally, one thing that New York homeowners would have in mind when thinking of undertaking a home improvement project would be more living space. Instead of gaining a home addition that requires tearing down walls and extending the area of your homes, the best possible solution is exhausting the possibilities that any unused area in your home has to offer. This makes basement remodeling an ideal project.

Now you are thinking, 'Why would I want to use my dungeon-like basement when I could extend and create another floor above my roof or enlarge an existing room?' To answer this and lay out more benefits, here are several points explaining why basement remodeling is the best way to go:

- Basement remodeling is a lot cheaper to work on to add square footage to your current living area than a full home addition. Even with most or with every same feature and design, it would only end up costing just a chunk of the whole budget that a full-scale home addition amounts to. With the latter, there would still be a need to not only demolish any existing wall or roof, you would also have to rebuild another to surround the additional expanse. But with remodeling your basement all the crucial structural foundations are already built like the walls, flooring and ceiling.

- Unlike other home improvement projects, basement remodeling involves an area which is not much frequented and is quite isolated. So even when the project is undergoing, you and your family will not be required to put up with so much of the hassles such as the noise caused by the ongoing construction as well as the traffic of contractors and other workers going about their works.

- Being literally surrounded by earth, the basement is typically cooler even if the sun is sizzling hot on summers and warmer during chilly winter months. So no matter what finish you plan and come up with, it will surely be enjoyed with the added benefit of its energy-efficiency.

- The ready availability and easy access to plumbing makes adding another bathroom or a kitchenette ideal. You can do your basement remodeling to result to a luxuriant personal spa, turning every inch of your basement into a haven of utter comfort. But even if you have other plans, the new room could still make good use of the added bathroom or kitchenette. This idea would not only considerably boost the quality of living in your home but add real value to it as well.

- When thinking of the best finish for your basement remodeling project, you can take advantage of the compact nature of the structures making up the basement and its intentional remoteness from the rest of your home. These characteristics make up for utmost privacy as well as great sound proofing. You could opt to have a playpen, home office, music room, and home theatre out of the project finish.

These enumerated, excellently answers why basement remodeling. Another consideration to include in your home improvement project is a qualified basement remodeling contractor. With this, you are just some steps away from project success.

Living Room Rough Framing

Making a Cost Plan For a Sunroom

According to National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) price of sunroom ranges from $12,000 - $70,000. NARI estimates that the sunrooms can save up to 70% of the investment cost. The cost that is incurred in the construction of a sunroom includes the material cost and the labor cost. It has been projected that on average the material of a sunroom may cost up to $10,400. Constructing the deck, may require approximately $1500 of material. For the construction of the stairs the estimate material cost can be near to $270 figure. Construction of roofing system, floor improvements and all other material costs for the construction of an average sunroom can be very near to $13,500 - $14,000.

The second main aspect that should be considered while chalking out the cost of sunroom is the labor cost. For the construction of an average sunroom the labor charges can exceed $11,000 figure. For the construction of the deck, the labor cost is estimated to be around $1650. Likewise, construction of the stairs may cost from $200 to $250.

If we merge these costs with the flooring, roofing system and the total labor cost which is not less than $12,000 we can get a big figure of around $25,000. So it is obvious that only the construction of an entire sunroom can cost up to $25000. It is commonly seen that the sunroom prices can vary because of the material used in the construction work.

Many people like the aluminum work for their sunrooms and it is also widely accepted material for sunrooms construction because it makes the sunroom very beautiful. But on the other side many people also use wooden material in the construction of the sunrooms which may reduce the beauty of the sunroom as compared to the aluminum work. An aluminum sunroom can be constructed with energy proficient exterior and interior with panes that are thermally broken. A sunroom with wooden panels can also be constructed with beams that can give your sunroom a classic touch. Sunrooms that are covered with vinyl shell are commonly used in the building of the Victorian and Georgian Art schools.

The type of fixture that is used in the sunroom can increase its total cost. The types of windows and doors that are planned to be fitted are the main factors that may increase the costs. Sliding doors with dual locking system can also be fitted that are widely used because of childproof handles. The style of the sunroom also plays an important role in increasing the cost or reducing it. There are various roof designs that are introduced for sunrooms; include cathedral, straight, curved and conservatory. The roofs of sunrooms are normally made-up of aluminum with a coating that helps in restricting the injurious ultra violet rays of the sun from entering in the room. Aluminum costs are surely more than vinyl but vinyl provides more insulation that does the aluminum. If you are building a wooden sunroom then keep in mind that it can cost very much to you because it requires the proper maintenance and care. Make sure to build a budget for this project before you select designs for your sunroom.

Acoustic Ceiling Water Damage

Cloudy Pool Water - Causes & Cures

Cloudy pool water is caused by many factors. These factors may be chemical (water balance, pH, improper methods), mechanical (pool filter system) or environmental (source water, excessive rain, heavy use). Often times, pool owners attempt to treat the symptoms but not the cause of the cloudy water, so we have to look at all of the things that may contribute to the problem. Let's look at the causes of cloudy swimming pool water, then we can look at treatments and cures.

Before we dive in let's first put cloudy water to the test. Cloudy pool water is in the eyes of the beholder. Cloudy can mean: Dull - the pool water just doesn't sparkle. Hazy - it just isn't as clear as it normally is. Cloudy - you can make out the bottom of the pool if you look hard. Opaque - the term says it all!

Chemical Reasons

Many pool owners quickly blame "bad chemicals" so let's start there. Here are some of the factors and their contribution to the cloudy water problem. Water chemistry can contribute to cloudy or hazy water - if the pH is HIGH (over 7.8) and or the Total Alkalinity (TA) is HIGH (over 200 ppm) and or the Calcium Hardness (CH) is HIGH (over 400 ppm). With pH & TA being high the water will become dull or flat and the chlorine reacts more slowly loses its ability to kill and control bacteria and algae. Now you have early algae growth - another cause of cloudy pool water. High CH doesn't become a problem until the water warms up to over 85 degrees F; then you have a "cloudy" condition that won't go away. Maintain good pool water balance with these parameters: pH - 7.2 - 7.6 (all pools); Total Alkalinity - 80 - 120 ppm (concrete) or 120 - 150 ppm (vinyl liner); Calcium Hardness 200 - 300 ppm (concrete) or 175 - 250 ppm (vinyl).

Other chemical or chemistry based reasons for cloudy pool water would be lack of regular shocking, periodic chemical cleaning of the filter, poorly maintained sanitizer levels, lack of a chemical maintenance routine. Regular weekly or biweekly shocking of the pool aids in oxidizing un-filterable swimmer waste such as body oils, lotions, urine, hair gel, perspiration, etc. We find that the single biggest mistake customers make in their normal care is not shocking the pool often enough or insufficiently (not using the proper amount of pool shock). Proper shocking also helps to "rejuvenate" the chlorine level and knock out early algae growth. Whenever you have a pool party with lots of expected bathers, consider shocking the pool the day before (helps build up the chlorine level providing a buffer for an eventual chlorine demand) as well as immediately following the party (shocks & oxidizes everything that was brought into the pool during the party -- if your guests weren't using the bathroom, the beer & soda had to go somewhere). Using a calcium hypochlorite shock such as BioGuard Burn Out Extreme is preferred since the product will get in, do its work, then get out. Potassium monopersulfate shocks like Oxysheen work well to help break up chloramines (combined chlorines), but shouldn't be used exclusively.

Mechanical Reasons

If the chemistry is good and the pool is being properly shocked and algaecide added every 1 to 2 weeks, then it is necessary to look at the mechanical reasons. The mechanical components contributing to cloudy pool water would be improper filter size (too small), improper pump and motor size (too small or too large a horsepower pump), insufficient filtering time, poor circulation, improper maintenance (vacuuming & brushing). I can recount story after story when I've walked into a customer's backyard to help them troubleshoot a problem pool only to find the filter shut off or improperly connected. When simple corrections are made, the pool water is clear in as little as 24 hours. Let's examine some basics.

Your swimming pool's filtering system should be operating a minimum of 8 to 10 hours per day, every day from opening to closing. If the pool water becomes cloudy or other problems become evident, then constant running of the filter until the problem is solved is required. If the filter was properly sized (even slightly bigger is better) then 8 to 10 hours daily is good. On the other hand, too large of a pump may be "harmful" to the filtration. If the horsepower is too great, you may be blowing dirt and everything else you want filtered right through the filter (especially sand filters). When it comes to 2 speed pumps, make sure the "high" speed run time is set for a minimum of 6 hours daily PLUS and additional 12 to 18 hours at "low" speed).

Consider using an automatic pool cleaner. You'll end up with better circulation, cleaner pool surfaces and less work.

The other mechanical reasons are also important. Regular vacuuming and brushing help with the overall circulation by moving water around. Keep directional "eyeballs" pointed DOWN to force filtered water down to the bottom of the pool and therefore aid in water movement by breaking up dead spots. Too frequent backwashing of the filter doesn't give the filter media enough time to do its best cleaning -- a dirty filter filters a finer particle. One final mechanical reason for cloudy pool water, lack of use. Actively used pools are always better circulated and filtered. So even if the water is cloudy (as long as the water is in good chemical balance), use the pool!

Environmental Reasons

Remember that whatever is out in the world, will eventually get in the pool and detract from water clarity. Pollen, dust, dirt, leaves, make-up water, bird droppings (forgot about those, right?), rain, local construction sites, etc. can all affect your swimming pool. Each of these culprits needs to treated differently. Pollen, dust and other fine particulate can be treated using a water clarifier like BioGuard Polysheen Blue. Flocculants work well in severe situations by settling the particles to pool bottom and vacuuming it all out on Waste. Use a skimmer sock inside of the skimmer to remove fine pollen or dust that may be too fine for your sand filter.

Leaves, swimmers, makeup water, droppings will create a chlorine demand. Shocking the pool is necessary. Make-up water can change the water chemistry affecting the pH, TA and CH not to mention the possible addition of heavy metals, all of which can cause or add to water cloudiness.

Final Notes

As you can see there's no 1 or 2 reasons for cloudy pool water. It's usually a combination of factors. Some of them not even coming from the pool itself. The best solution to cloudy pool water is prevention utilizing a good, regular chemical and cleaning maintenance program. About 30 to 60 minutes per week is all that it takes. If or when your pool water turns cloudy, don't start adding clarifiers or flocs. Get down to the real cause. Look at all of the contributing factors.

Old Versus New Construction Adhesives

When I first started building in 1978 as a young carpenter and an apprentice to my father. I had the grand illusions of becoming what they call on the east coast a master carpenter and on the West Coast a journeyman carpenter.

Part of my training in construction was learning to use the proper adhesive and caulking for different parts of the building project. We used to use a standard solvent-based construction adhesive when we were building our stairs and they would also use this adhesive on the floors to eliminate squeaks.

This glue dried extremely hard and everyone thought the harder the better. This construction adhesive was great when I started using it in 1978. There wasn't the polyethylene super elastic expandable multi-use glue and caulking construction adhesives at that time.

We used this brittle glue and it always seemed like a waste of time. As the wood dried and started to shrink the brittle hard glue would crack and break away from the wood it was glued to. Normally the glue was breaking away from plywood floor sheeting. I have seen 2 x 12 shrink 3/8 of an inch before in as little as a few months during the summer.

Now as time went on the old construction adhesives were replaced with a new window sealant made by a company called TOPS. This stuff was the hottest and best product of the decade to me. I used this stuff for everything.

This new urethane glue was now being used for sub floors, stair treads, sealing the windows flashing and siding. This stuff is still in use today and is a great choice for all of the uses I mentioned above. The price for this sealant is about double that of most water-based or solvent-based glues. But it's worth it.

So there you have it I like the urethane glues because of their flexibility, elasticity, their ability to adhere to wood concrete or metal and their performance in the years ahead.

There is one thing to keep in mind when using construction adhesives. Most construction workers seem to ignore the fact that the wood needs to be dry and clean before applying the construction adhesive. There have been quite a few times I have witnessed carpenters working with me and ignoring my advice.

Don't put yourself into this category. Doing quality work and following the manufacturers recommended installation instructions for their product will decrease your liability if there is ever a problem. Read the instructions carefully on all of the building products you use.

The manufacturers of these construction adhesives have thoroughly tested them. So use them properly and follow all safety warnings.

Budget Your Total Bathroom Remodel

Like any responsible homeowner or renter, you plan to budget for your upcoming bathroom remodeling project. But finding the dough to accessorize like a celebrity may prove more than challenging. Whether you're looking to install high-tech toilets, new faucets and showerheads or simply to afford new rugs, follow these penny-pinching tips; you'll be on your way to a new total bathroom makeover without cutting back on your family's food or selling your assets.

Plan in Advance

No matter what size remodeling project you plan to undertake, you can never plan too far in advance. The larger the project, the more long term you should think. But before you either sell you're car or begin purchasing new bathroom accessories or fixtures, write down your plan. Create a mock blueprint of your ideal bathroom, complete with what fixtures you need or want to replace, as well as the aspects you can repurpose and refurbish for free. Now, conduct simple market research online and estimate the average price for the new features you wish to include in your makeover project. For standard durable pieces, look for trusted brands such as Kohler, Price Pfister and American Standard.

A good rule to follow should be based upon how long you intend to stay in your home. If you're simply looking at a quick fix and sell home, then opt for simple improvements. If your family will be staying for decades, you may want to consider comfort and ease first, and then think of what will increase the value of the home over time.

Additional costs are accrued when you pay for the labor. So no matter how big or small you plan to remodel, also factor in how much - or how little - the cost of labor will be.

Evaluate the Spending

With your estimated expenses in hand, examine your current weekly and monthly spending habits. Are there any areas where you can afford to trim down? A few dollars here and there spent on gourmet coffee, fast food restaurants and even those extra cents tacked onto gasoline prices paid with debit or credit cards can really add up quickly. Budget-friendly ideas include carpooling, consolidating all errands into one day to eliminate expensive fuel costs as well as opting for stay-at-home dinners which tend to be cheaper and healthier.

Stick to the Plan

If you've decided to trade in your Chinese take-out Tuesdays and quick trips to the post office for a home cooked meal and a walk to the local stores, then stick to it. And it will be tough to stick to this plan, but be prepared. It's easy to find excuses (it's too cold outside to walk); writing down specific tasks on your calendar will help keep you focused on your goal: remodeling your new bathroom. Also, seeing tasks written in permanent ink will help guilt-trip you into behaving, especially if you've slipped once or twice.

Small Budget Makeovers

With the rocky economy and unstable job market, many families simply cannot afford a total bathroom makeover as they've dreamed. However, a few small and inexpensive changes can transform your bathroom. Often, just a simple accent wall in a dark, rich paint can change the feel of a bathroom instantly-while only a fraction of the cost of totally repainting your entire bathroom. Check out local yard sales and online listings for freebies and discount giveaways; a wicker basket or antique bedside table can double as an artistic and decorative toilet paper holder.

Total Redesign

Transforming your entire bathroom will require a hefty budget, especially if you're reinstalling valves, bath tubs and cabinetry (which will most likely require the assistance of a professional). Splurge on the luxury model toilets with heated seats, heated tile floors to keep your toes toasty or the automated sink faucets that eliminate wasted water. Over time, you'll see more money in your pocket, since these luxury upgrades will most likely replace your frequent trips to day spas.

Crawl Space Dehumidifier Can Protect Your Home From Wood Rot

Humidity and moisture in your crawl space can often lead to a serious problem for homeowners not using a crawl space dehumidifier; wood rot. Wood rot, also called wood decay, is caused by microscopic organisms that belong to the fungi group. These organisms are what cause the wood to actually decay.

Wood is comprised of 3 major components: cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Wood rots because the fungi "eat" these 3 major components of wood cells by releasing enzymes that digest wood cells.

Wood that has a moisture content of 20% or above is very susceptible to rotting. The attacking fungi require 4 conditions for colonization:

1) Adequate oxygen supply

2) Temperature range between 40-100 degrees Fahrenheit

3) Constant moisture source

4) Adequate supply of food (wood)

Untreated moisture damage can cause a decrease in your property value by 10% to 15% according to the National Association of Waterproofing and Structural Repair Contractors (NAWSRC).

Catching moisture problems like wood rot in the early stages will save you both money and headaches. There are several warning signs to alert you that moisture may be damaging your home: excessive condensation on windows, blistering or peeling paint, discolored wood surfaces, splits across the wood grain, mold spots, musty odors and standing water in your crawl space.

If you notice any of these warning signs, you need to determine where the moisture is coming from. Check for plumbing leaks, roof leaks, debris filled gutter and downspouts, foundation cracks and poorly graded soil that drains towards your home. In your crawlspace, look for mold stains on the foundation walls and/or puddled water.

Moist, humid air from your crawlspace increases the moisture content of the wood in your home, making it vulnerable to wood rot. By installing a vapor barrier and a high grade crawl space dehumidifier, you can protect the value of your home.

How to Save Green in a Green Bathroom Renovation

In today's uncertain housing market, whether you are thinking of an extensive bathroom renovation or planning a face lift, the remodeling decisions you make today, and their results, will impact your wallet and the environment today, and in the future. By using bathtub refinishing as the core method of your green bathroom renovation project, you will save money, time and the environment. The core principle of green bathroom renovation is to save natural assets that are so very important to our survival, while saving money - green and the environment- green. These assets include water and energy.

Speaking of saving natural resources, let's talk first of all then about bathtub refinishing.

Bathtub reglazing costs about $450-$650 and is done in the bathroom. Home owners can even choose their own color scheme. For instance, you may like a very light pink bathtub, to with your darker color pink wall. And you may finish it off with a black sink and toilet ( new toilets only may be refinished. check with your local bathtub refinishing company.) put together. There is no tear-out, no plumbers or tile-setters involved. To recap: the benefits of bathtub refinishing over replacement are savings in time, money (up to 80%) and the environment- green.

And speaking of green, tub replacement costs $1500-$2500 depending on location and contractor. Here are the reasons why it costs about $300 to buy a new tub at your friendly home remodeling store, but costs $1500-$2500 to replace, not counting the cost of dumping the non-biodegradable tub into the landfill,- environmental impact.

Replacement of a bathtub involves tear-out, and the services of different sub-contractors. Hiring different sub-contractors yourself or through a hired general contractor, is a specialty in mess- if any exists. It takes a special gift in the art of co-ordination, and answer to lots of prayer. Such miss and match scheduling can give you ulcers, and raise your blood pressure- I am not a doctor. To recap: replacement involves the services of different contractors with varying skills and businesses, working on one project at your place, in a little room- your bathroom. Good health to you.

Now, consider the energy cost of replacement - energy is used in making and transporting new fixtures. First, the raw material have to be procured and transported to a warehouse to start the manufacturing process. Then valuable assets are wasted in the transportation of a new fixture from the factory to the warehouse, and to its final resting place-your bathroom. Replacement costs more, takes more time and its impact on the environment is one that a lot of people do not want a part of it.

Other energy and water savings

One of the ways that water is waster is wasted and green goes down the drain is by using old, water guzzling shower heads. Replacing them saves in water bills. Dual- flush toilets are used by many to cut down on the amount is wasted and the amount of green that is washed into the toilet. Dual flush toilets as name implies, has two flush modes. One for number one and another mode, using more water when going number two. Energy efficient bulbs will definitely cut down your energy bills. Skylights in your bathroom can add an inspirational ambiance, and supply you with a fresher and cleaner air.

Today, many are doing their best in looking for ways to save money in their green bathroom renovation, while adding value that makes a positive impact on the environment. Bathtub refinishing, when combined with other energy, water and environmentally sound and best renovation practices is a happy choice choice for saving green and living green in a blue economy.

Fitting a Shower Into Your Tiny Bathroom

People who live in urban apartments or old houses can face problems with installing a shower into their bathrooms. Most of these bathrooms are extremely small, and it may seem that since all the space is already taken up by existing fixtures, there's no hope of ever having a shower. However, there are options available to give you that shower you want.

The first thing you could try is taking the bathtub completely out. In most of these types of accommodations, the bathtubs are old, large, and take up way more room than they need to. By removing this old tub, you'll have the room you need to fit a fancy shower enclosure in the space instead. Unfortunately, this means no more long hot baths, but if you want to create more space, this may be your only option.

Before replacing your bathtub you need to realize that removing the tub will decrease the value of your property. Most potential buyers will expect there to be a bathtub. If you have a very large bedroom, you might consider adding a sunken bathtub to the bedroom in addition to adding the shower. You'll find that a lot of people will really like this idea.

Maybe you have one of those nifty old claw foot bathtubs that are so in demand today. If you have sufficient ceiling height, you can add a showerhead to your bathtub. If you don't have the height to work with, you can find shower heads on flexible hoses that you can attach to the faucet of your bathtub.

You might decide to forget the shower enclosure and the bathtub and just turn your entire bathroom into a shower. You will need to install walls and floors made of concrete or stone which could be rather costly, but the results will be truly amazing. Just be sure to add a floor drain. The problem with this kind of design may be where you're going to put a toilet, sink, and mirror. If there's room, you could put up a glass or Plexiglas partition and place your other fixtures behind the wall.

The more things you're able to remove from your small bathroom will mean you have that much more additional room for a fancy shower. When you get to doing remodeling of this scope, you will probably need to find a professional contractor to do the work for you.

Floor Decorating Ideas - Bamboo For Flooring

When I was growing up the choice of floor decoration was oilcloth [a thin type of linoleum], or linoleum [lino] in the bedrooms and, in the living rooms downstairs, lino covered with a large rug or, if you had a better budget, herringbone hardwood flooring with a large rug in the middle. A stair runner lined the center of the stairs held in place with a brass stair-rod. These ideas moved on into the 1970s with fitted carpets which had large swirly patterns: you were really somebody if you could afford fitted carpets! Fitted carpets came and stayed, the only real changes being the textures and fabrics, the colours and whether the carpets were plain or patterned. These all changed according to fashion. Cork tiles made a brief appearance as being the must-have flooring options in the bathroom and kitchen. They never really went out of fashion as they are practical and warm underfoot.

However, the late 1990s was when laminate flooring made its appearance and hardwood flooring came back with a vengeance. Floors to aspire to are now hardwood floors, with the whole of the living area having the same kind of flooring. Gone are the days of the unhygienic carpeting in the kitchen: this has been replaced by a multitude of flooring options, from recycled rubber to slate, stone, hardwood, laminates, and tiling. Many bedrooms are also finished with laminate or hardwood flooring, brightened up with scattered rugs. In my own home, however, I have retained deep-pile carpets in the bedrooms and, in all the downstairs rooms I have installed hardwood flooring which has been stained and varnished to give it a deep timbre to bring out the beauty of the wood. It is so much easier to keep clean and I believe this is far more hygienic than fitted carpets everywhere which can harbour germs deep down in the fibres.

The number of DIY shops that sell both hardwood and laminate flooring is amazing when, if you think about it carefully, fitting flooring effectively so that it looks good and lies properly, is an experts' job. It is certainly not something I would consider doing. After all, if you mess it up, hardwood is not a cheap option - if you are paying out that sort of money, as far as I am concerned, it is better to pay a bit more and employ an expert to fit it properly. In this case, the end result well justifies the means! So, if you are choosing laminates or hardwoods, what are you going to be looking for? Good hardwood flooring will add value to your property and will last a lifetime. If it does start to look a bit tired, it just needs to be sanded down, re-stained and given a new coat of varnish. Solid hardwood flooring planks are available in cherry, walnut, maple, and oak. Also available are other woods such as teak and bamboo which, although not a wood but a grass, is very popular in these economically sustainable times.

Dream Home Remodeling: Is It Really a Dream?

Dream home remodeling may not always be a dream experience. Many people have waited years to start building their dream home. They have labored over the designs, cabinets, and floor plans. Now the time has finally come to start building their home.

Handling the Stress

Once the building or remodel process begins the stress may at times be overwhelming. Building homes takes a lot of people and making sure all those people are doing what you want them to do can be a difficult task.

To help manage the stress that comes with this time you can follow these simple steps.

1. Be Prepared - Don't start building your home until the design is finished and you even know what the interior design is going to be. Creating a home before the plans are finished is a sure-fire way to disaster and a whole lot of stress.

2. Budget - Have a budget and stick to it! One of the biggest mistakes people make in new real estate is not properly planning their budget. Create a thorough list of all your costs and leave a big cushion. You don't want to get halfway done and run out of money. Then you'll have a half finished house that you will still have to make payments on.

3. Get Help - If you are not an experienced contractor then don't try to act as your own general contractor. It will be worth your money to hire someone else that is trained. Plus the amount of stress a general contractor can relieve is worth its weight in gold!

4. Relax - At times this may seem impossible to do...but finding time to relax during your building or repair project is absolutely essential. During your creative home remodeling it may seem impossible to relax, so try to pre-schedule time for it.

Braving the Elements

Weather can be another huge stressor when it comes to building and remodeling projects. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do to control the weather or even predict it. Despite the weatherman's best work, the weather is often still very unpredictable.

Even though you can't predict the weather you can plan ahead for the possibility that bad weather may come. When designing your timeline make sure and leave plenty of cushion for rainy days and other weather related issues that may arise.

Discuss the effects of weather on your building project with your contractors so you are well informed. Ask questions if you are unsure of anything. Discussing the subject openly with your contractors before the building begins will make it easier to develop your timeline. Most contractors are very good at predicting real timelines, but they choose to bid shorter ones to get your work.

Discuss your honest need for a firm timeline and your willingness to accept a longer time frame that is more accurate instead of an inflated timeline that is wishful thinking. Your contractor will likely give you a date that is several weeks later than their original bid, but this is much more realistic and will provide you better information for you planning.

Creative home remodeling is not as difficult as you think! Easy-to-use computer programs make the planning fun and large home-improvement stores aren't hard to find. Need help getting started? Visit us at: http://www.yourcreativehomeremodeling.com

Wood Counter Tops, A Consistent Choice for the Modern Kitchens

Wood countertops are becoming popular again in modern kitchens. We now know that wooden countertops, when properly cared for, are both long lasting and sanitary. The modern adhesives are strong enough to keep the wood staves bonded together even the butcher block is submerged into the water. The finishing oils (mineral oils) are safe in contact with food products and preserve the wood surfaces.

The solid wood, as a material of choice for counter tops, exhibits incontestable advantages such as:

Aesthetics

Imparting a warm, relaxing feeling, the wooden top is the natural complement of any solid wood or veneered cabinetry. The wooden tops will wonderfully go together with hardwood floorings, moldings, cornices and mantels, conferring a genuine sense of balance to your kitchen space.

Functionality

A hardwood top is very easy to cut to templates and even easier to install. Unlike the solid surface or laminate, wood tops have a minimum of chemical components, which make them extremely safe in contact with foods. Unlike the other countertop materials, any occurring scratch can be easily removed by sanding the area; the wood tops actually constitute the only known surface that can be renewed without employing special tools or requiring special skills. Hardwood surfaces can be used as kitchen island tops, inserted sink covers, sections of countertop, or as butcher block hidden under the countertop that can be pulled as drawer or cart. Your imagination will surely find plenty of other interesting, visually attractive applications.

Durability

If properly sealed and installed, a wooden top can literally last a lifetime. Unlike marble, granite or tile, the wooden tops have a great shock absorbing capacity that further assures considerable life span.

Hygiene

For a quite few decades, the plastic and laminate surfaces, due to their non-porous structure were considered much safer than wood for applications such as chopping meat or slicing vegetables. The wood, because of its porosity was thought an ideal surface for harmful bacteria like Salmonella, Staphylococus or Escherichia coli to thrive. However, a study undertaken in 1993 by the microbiologists of Wisconsin Food Research Institute and another one carried out in 1998 at university of Florida discovered the strong antibacterial properties that wood surfaces exhibit, properties that no other cutting surface appears to possess.
According to these studies and to others that followed them, on wood surfaces, bacterial populations disappear quite fast, without external intervention, while on plastic surfaces they persist and actually multiply. Although these properties vary among wood species, the wooden cutting surfaces are increasingly accepted as the first choice of health-conscious individuals.

Price

Hardwood is usually priced higher than laminate but are far less expensive than stone, granite, solid surface, tile or steel.

All About Custom Entry Doors

Custom Entry Doors have recently become almost a fad in many towns. There are 100's of designs, styles , colors, wood species available. Most of these doors are being imported from China. Although there are still some manufacturers in the United Stated that are producing them locally. The "Import Doors" usually are made from chinese lumber. They have Chinese grown trees which resemble some of our North American trees but they are not the same. You will find the pricing of these import doors is quite competitive. You will also find that there is rarely any warranty available on these import doors.

Much of the wood in China is air dried and you will find very few Kilns in these parts. The result is that the wood has not been dried properly and there is a chance of failure in these doors. Namely, there may be too much humidity in the wood and it increases the chances for the door to warp. Most doors made in North America use kiln dried lumber. Many of the North American Door Manufacturers use an engineered wood substrate as an interior core. The engineered wood is suppose to reduce the amount of movement in the door. Many of these custom entry doors have only 1/8" or 1/4" solid wood veneers on the exterior and the interior core is an engineered wood. Although there are few companies still existing the the US that built the doors out of "Solid Wood". I believe the best quality door is still the Solid Wood Door. You don't have to worry about screws getting stripped or delaminating of the veneers.

If you would like to find a custom designed entry door made in America, I would suggest you search "Google" under "Custom Entry Door". Also, you can go to Macraesbluebook.com and search under "Doors Wood".

There are an endless number of design choices in custom entry doors. You will see Wrought Iron, Glass, Decorative Glass, Leaded Glass, Stained Glass, Clavos(Large Tacks), Speakeasy Doors and Grills, Sidelites,Transom Windows. I would suggest you search your favorite wood browse under "Custom Entry Door" and find a design you like. Next, find a local manufacturer to manufacturer the design you want. Also, you can go to custommade.com and look under Entry Doors for ideas and suppliers.

As mentioned earlier, there are several towns where "Custom Entry Doors" have almost become a fad. It seems like one homeowner is trying to out do the other. In the Chicagoland area, you can actually drive around certain towns and see your fair share of unique doors. I have found that the towns with the most character in their "custom entry doors" include: Hinsdale, Oakbook, Lake Forest, Highland Park in the state of Illinois.

The most popular wood species for entry doors include: Mahogany, Oak, Alder, Maple, and Walnut. I would recommend a hardwood door because it will be less likely to scratch or be damaged. Also, important is the finish. Be sure to use a clear coat with UV protectors. Many contractors use Spar Varnish but there are some better products out there. I prefer an Exterior Finish which made in italy called ICA. There is also another high end finish called "West System".

The custom entry doors can range from $2000-$10,000 for an import and from $5,000 to $50,000 for an intricate door system (Sidelites, transom windows, oversized door).

If you have any questions regarding custom entry doors please feel free to email me at danncd@yahoo.com. I have been custom designing and manufacturing entry doors at my manufacturing facility for many years. I have been in business for 29 years.

How to Fix a Leaking Shower Head - Secrets From the Pros

How would you describe a dripping shower head- galling, grating or excruciatingly painful? The constant drip has the remarkable alacrity to get on one's nerves pretty quickly. But what most homeowners are not familiar with is the fact that this mundane leak in the bathroom can cause a severe drain on your resources and finances.

And before you begin to flip the yellow pages to ferret out details of a plumber, let me tell you that one does not require the competence or the efficiency of a plumbing professional to fix a leaking shower head. A brand new washer from a hardware store near your house, a screwdriver and an adjustable wrench are your tools in this war against the leaking shower head.

Tackle The Leak On A War Footing

So you believe that instead of burying your head in the sand in true ostrich fashion, the need of the hour is to plunge headlong into this pretty intractable situation? Well, your consternation can be attenuated to a considerable degree if you understand the root cause of the problem.

The leak could occur either at the point where the pipe and the shower head meet, or a clogged shower head may be the villain of the piece.

No matter what the diagnosis is, here's what you should do to ensure that the situation does not assume rampaging dimensions:

  • Remove the shower head, at times with some help from an adjustable wrench.
  • Remove and check the condition of the rubber gasket inside the shower head. If this part leaves a black residue on your hands, it's hinting at replacement.
  • Using the right size, push the new part into place. The ring must be placed flat inside the shower head assembly.
  • A few wraps of Teflon tape around the pipe threads in the same directions as the threads is important.
  • Thread the shower back into place until it's fairly tight.
  • It's now time to check for results. In case there's no leak, Bravo, you have succeeded.

Pest Control by Chemical Means

Pests can pose untold miseries to human kind if not checked timely. Some pests like locusts are known to have wiped out the entire food supply of some African countries in the past.Rats are no less destructive.Birds like parrots and their likes are destructive to fruit orchards. Some pests like mosquitoes are feared for their ability to transmit contagious diseases. Ticks and mites affect cattle to deadly results.

History tells us that even from the early stages of civilization; pest control measures have been given utmost importance. There are evidences that chemical pesticides were used even from 4500 BC.The last century saw a spurt in the development of different chemical compounds for pest control due to the increased need for food and good living conditions.

The readily acting, supremely efficient and highly toxic chemical pesticides were instrumental in making farming sector a profit making service.Food security of many countries was ensured by employing large scale pest management measures.Another added advantage chemical pesticides had over natural means was that a plethora of different pesticides were available for different kinds of pestilence.

However, a lot of negative side effects to the use of chemicals were noticed later.Chemical pesticides are not partial to any creature that comes up, and, friendly microorganisms and other creatures also got wiped out.Ecological balances of many regions altered for the worse.People living in their areas of use developed deadly diseases and disorders.Pesticide residue in the harvested produces has induced genetic and reproductive problems to human beings.

However, all these negative effects have not gone unnoticed by policy makers.Government funded researches to find out safer chemical fertilizers are taking place around the globe.Pesticide companies are also chipping in with their own efforts to find safer pesticides.

But whatever havoc they can wreak in the environment, chemical fertilizers are still the best bet for controlling pests over large, unenclosed areas. The combination of healthy farming practices and judicial use of pesticides can sustain the ecological balance of the world.

Is it Worth Looking For Home Water Purifiers?

There is a growing concern, even in the so called civilized countries, about Water distributed to citizens' homes by municipal services all over the world.

Scientists and Researchers alike advise that, because of increasing global population and accelerating Climate Changes, due to human activities disregardful of the environment, a major water supply crisis is to be expected.

Besides that, Water Quality is at risk in many locations. A Google search of this term will produce a large number of alarming news and articles pointing to dangers to health.

You may wish to see for yourself independent and authoritative confirmation of the assertions above in the References that we propose for your consultation at the bottom of this article.

Many people turned to Bottled Water hoping to have solved the problem once and for all. Unfortunately this is far from true. It is now clear that, because of lack of accepted standards, bottled water is often not better than tap water.

Its quality may be much worse if the plastic bottles are left to degrade in sunlight for a long time.

Furthermore the discarded empty plastic bottles pose a costly threat to the environment for the pollution they generate.

There is a whole industry thriving on the misconceptions that made possible the enormous waste connected with the consumption of this not needed but much requested commodity.

The promotional campaigns of that rich industry tend to perpetuate the dependence of innocent people on the bottled water illusion of better and safer supply.

Different technologies are proposed to improve tap water quality by performing at the point of use a purification treatment to the vital liquid flowing in the city piping.

One should know better the action of such purifiers because, while the removal of contaminants is performed with similar results by different techniques, the individual substances removed may be different, so that certain devices may deplete essential minerals from the final product.

Involved parties view often the quality produced as more or less acceptable for public health, depending on their vested interests.

Because of the contrasting opinions moving around, it would be advisable that inquisitive people who care for their family health, research independently the issues as far as possible, by looking into official and authoritative documents and reports.

It is recommended to look for a reliable and trusted supplier of water purification systems, by asking questions and by verifying testimonials and customer satisfaction.

Here are the References announced above for interested readers:
"However, unless the basic cause - globally increasing greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels - is dealt with, periods of water shortage will become more frequent and severe." (http://www.csiro.au/news/ps2cd.html)

Pressure Washers

A pressure washer is based on the principle of washing using pressurized water. The high pressure from the machine, which is sometimes 100 percent higher than that from a garden hose, causes grime and dust to be washed away. Pressure washers have been commonly used in industries but they are finding applicability in household activities, too. Their affordability as well as ease of operation is making them a common household appliance. Pressure washers are now available a prices starting from $200 to $500 or more depending on the water pressure. They may be electric, hydraulic, diesel-based or gasoline-based.

Washers are also classified as hot or cold.

In a pressure washer, water from a garden hose is made to come out in a strong stream. This is because of an electric or gasoline-powered engine attached to a pump. This pump compresses the water and builds up pressure in the pump. The hose has a trigger that has the option of spraying the water either in short bursts or as a continuous spray. The water can also be adjusted according to use. Pressure washers can be used on wood or concrete and find applications in residential, commercial and industrial heavy-duty power washing for automotive contractors, industrial users and pressure washing businesses.

Gasoline based pressure washers operate at between five and seven horsepower and are more powerful than electric pressure washers. Some operate at 24 horse power. Electric pressure washers are preferred lighter cleaning jobs that require less pressure such as windows and glass doors. Using gasoline-based washers on glass surfaces may lead to cracking or breaking of the surface from too much pressure.

The most important things to consider when choosing a pressure washer are the PSI (pounds per square inch), which indicates water pressure, and GPM (gallons per minute), which indicates the flow of water. Higher PSI and GPM means greater power and more pressure. Also check the weight of the washer since more powerful washers are heavier and are more difficult to use.

Pressure washers are being designed with ergonomic handling options and easy adjustments. The main things to be considered while buying a pressure washer are the difficulty of the cleaning job, frequency of use and the cost. Pressure washers also come with various options like rotating nozzles for covering larger area, brush attachments including rotating brushes, detergent attachment and soap sprayers etc.

Pressure washers are available at most hardware stores. The Internet is a good source for locating a good pressure washer. There are several web sites that provide useful information as well as pressure washers for sale. These sites provide the option of comparing a wide range of pressure washer models, the manufacturing advantages, prices, discount options and warranties.

What does web designing mean anyway?

That's pretty simple as it is basically a way for your prospects and/or customers to find you from the comfort of their own home.

By just using their home computer and having an internet connection, business can reach more and more customers
than ever before. The ability to talk and build that all important relationship with a customer all the way in
Europe, is astonishing.

Now how in the world do you accomplish this!?

Well, it's really not difficult if you have the right know how and the right tools. There are many places today on the world wide web that offer specialized training for building a website. But you don't have to go that route, as these sites are usually extremely expensive and take a very very long time to learn.

You could of course hire someone to do your web designing but this will cost you hundreds to thousands of dollars and you won't have much control over the design.

The other route you can take is to do it yourself, this is not as hard as it might sound. There are many tools out there called WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) where you just type in your content and you have a website. Again, not much control over your layout design.

The best way to get started on web designing is to learn just a little HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language)
Then you can either purchase or get for free, templates. These are sites that are built without any content, they already have graphics on them and easy to follow instructions anyone can follow.

The best place I know of that offers great tutorials on learning HTML in the shortest amount of time is http://www.w3schools.com/html

This is a free resource and you learn at your own pace right on your computer.

Just remember, that when you do learn web designing, first consider the purpose of your website, this will make things easier on you, espeically when you need to edit your web designing.
